Korea and Japan Cooperate with each other for Standardization of Smart Grids «





Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS, President: Seo Gwang-hyeon) under the Ministry of Knowledge Economy held on June 12 the first regular meeting on cooperation for standardization of smart grids with the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan at the latter’s office in Tokyo.

The meeting was attended by working-level officials from Korea and Japan, including Director of New Industry Standardization Division Yun Jong-gu at Korea’s Knowledge Economy Ministry and Director of Standard Certification Policy Division Noda Koichi at Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.


The meeting served as an opportunity to build close cooperation relations between the two countries for standardization of smart grids, including harmonious standardization of technologies for invigorating smart grid industry in the two countries and exchanging information on certification of smart grid facilities.


The two sides agreed to initially cooperate each other in core smart grid areas, such as energy storage devices, smart homes and electric vehicle charging equipment. And they agreed to organize a joint specialist council as soon as possible by exchanging information on specialists and participating companies in these areas.


In Japan, the government is providing subsidies when installing energy storage facilities and house energy management systems to ease problems in electric power supply and demand after the catastrophic accident of a nuclear power plant.


Officials of the two countries also discussed at the meeting ways of improving procedural difficulties in receiving certificates for equipment experiencing by Korean companies in the course of exporting energy storage devices, renewable energy facilities and electric vehicle charging equipment to Japan. And Japan promised to provide detailed information on smart grid certification system. The two sides decided to discuss later matters of dispatching test-related officials to Korea and of designating a Korean test organization as a qualification test institution.


They also decided to hold the second government-level meeting in November in Korea during the period of Korea Smart Grid Week, along with a joint workshop on smart grids of Korean and Japanese companies.


The two sides are expected to discuss at the workshop matters of exchanging information on standards of smart grids and certification test, while jointly proposing international standards.


The cooperation between Korea and Japan for standardization of smart grids is significant in that the two top rivals in rechargeable battery area have set up foundation for leading in world market. It also served as a momentum of enhancing international status of the two countries by jointly dealing with international standardization activities and establishing strategic win-win relations between the two countries.
